The sad story of the twa (two) sisters was widespread in Child's day;
versions existed throughout Great Britain, Ireland, and even several
Scandinavian countries. Some versions describe the younger as fair
and the elder as dark, a common convention. They are at odds,
sometimes over love, sometimes inheritance. The instrument that
figures so prominently in the story is often a harp. This version is
taken from a 1656 broadside ("The Miller and the King's Daughter”).
The English folk group Pentangle recorded an excellent version in
1970  as “Cruel Sister,” which can be found on their album of the
same name.
